Our little ole blue striped gas can was quite the hit over the weekend as we had the honor of being featured on the front page of Etsy. ClassicObsessive, who has a vintage shop there, created their own mix of items from a variety of shops and titled it 'Barnyard, Barnyard'. Their shop is actually used as a fundraiser for their family farm so they know a bit about country charm.

Keepin' Up With The Joneses

You've heard that phrase before...keeping up with the Joneses. It's about having it all and then some. The bigger, the better.

I was thinking about all of this while eyeing my garden that will soon again produce our fresh food and satisfy my indulgence of playing in the dirt. And then the thought came to me. Way back when, gardeners were filled with pride and joy over their little plot of land. Not the big, beautiful house. Nor the fancy car in the driveway. Just the GARDEN!

The garden of yesteryear. It made your back ache and your hands calloused, but it brought a sense of pride from working your land to provide for your family. A true connection to the soil was the status symbol of keeping up with the Joneses.

I am so fortunate to live in the country with a lake in our backyard with plenty of neighbors all around. And what is sad is that no one gardens. I take pride in my garden and enjoy those neighbors who admit they had to come over and take a peek.

I had one retired neighbor admit to me that he had to bring his house guests to my back yard to show them my garden. Those guests said it was one of the nicest gardens they've ever seen. Now I admit, they probably haven't seen too many gardens or they were just being nice. But who cares?

In my own simplistic right, I'm keeping up with the Joneses. It's about having it all and then some...with just my garden.

Spring Fever

Time In A Bottle

How do you spend your time? Do you work a lot and play a little? Or do you work a little and play a lot? Can you balance both? Better yet...how about work and play crossing paths and becoming one. Now that's a great combo and that's what is good about being a picker.

This past weekend, we hopped in the vehicle and headed out on a country road. Found a small, interesting town that held lots of promise with plenty of poking and prodding to be done. Nothing is more fun than discovering places and things on a whim with no specific plan in hand. Don't need a GPS. Heck, don't even need a road map.


This little town was brimming with good folks and ole treasures to be discovered. And discover, we did. Loaded up the back of the vehicle and knew this area would be worth another visit someday. It will take me some time to get all our finds up for sale, but so worth it.

Taking a less traveled route home, there on the side of the narrow, winding road was a wonderful surprise. The first sign of spring...daffodils!!! Now those would be worth pickin'!!!

Cowboy Chic

I should have seen it coming...like a lone cowboy on his horse just appearing over the horizon. The Cowboy Chic design is making a strong comeback right now due to the recent release of the movie 'True Grit'. It's all about horses, hides, and having that all American, western look and feel.

Love this clean, traditional look above. This style can have so many looks and variables to fit your own personal preference.

It all begins with using earth tones, rustic textures, and rugged accessories. What is nice about this style is that it can fit into your existing decor with minor touches while not having to do a complete overhaul. Accessories can make a big impact. Try picture frames with leather or barn siding, a cowboy hat hanging on a hook, or find creative uses for horseshoes, spurs, and/or stirrups. 

I am into the Farmhouse style, myself, and can easily incorporate the cowboy look and feel if desired. In our pickin' travels, we have recently acquired cowboy and horse items. I went ahead and put them into our country store, OldTimePickers.
